Bryden Scholarships
Bryden Scholarships support graduate students and early-career scholars for attendance at the annual Summer Symposium in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, Canada. The Shaw Festival provides Bryden Scholarship winners with free Symposium registration, lodging for the three nights of the Symposium, and tickets for performances of the Shaw plays included in the Symposium program.
Acceptance of a Bryden Scholarship assumes that you will attend the entire Symposium and present a paper or appear on a panel as scheduled.
The Bryden Scholarship is named after Professor Ronald Bryden, former Literary Adviser to the Shaw Festival, who was, at various times, the dramaturge to Britain’s Royal Shakespeare Company, one of England’s leading drama critics, and the head of the Graduate Centre for the Study of Drama at the University of Toronto. A collection of his essays entitled Shaw and his Contemporaries has been published by the Shaw Festival.

ISS Travel Grants
Travel grants, paid for by the international Shaw Society are available to assist graduate students and early-career scholars in paying travel expenses not otherwise reimbursed to attend ISS symposia and conferences. Acceptance of an ISS Travel Grant assumes that you will attend the entire event and present a paper or appear on a panel as scheduled.
Applicants from North America will normally receive a maximum of $500 when events are held in the U.S.A. or Canada but can request more for conferences outside North America. Applicants outside North America can similarly request more than $500 for travel to conferences held in the U.S.A. or Canada.
Travel grants can be awarded by themselves or in conjunction with a Bryden Scholarship.

R.F. Dietrich Research Scholarships
Named in honor of the Founding President of the International Shaw Society, “The R. F. Dietrich Research Scholarship for Shaw Studies” is an annual award of up to $1,000 USD to support research into any aspect of the life and work of Bernard Shaw by a graduate student or early-career scholar. The actual amount awarded will depend on the extent of the research project and other available sources of funding.
The award, which may be held in conjunction with other awards, is intended to help defray costs associated with visits to libraries and other institutions that hold special Shaw collections and archives. Other research-related costs may be eligible at the discretion of the Selection Committee.
Candidates for R.F. Dietrich Research Scholarships must be members in good standing of the International Shaw Society. Scholarship winners will be expected to present a paper on their research at the earliest possible ISS event (Summer Symposium or Conference), even if the findings are intended to form part of a monograph or larger project.
