 I HATE SHAW!

                     an open discussion led by the International Shaw Society

The American critic Norman Hapgood commented that “Mr. Shaw sees himself the bugbear of respectability and common-sense.” Shaw was not only unpopular with the establishment of his time, he actively sought out that unpopularity, going to great length to offend people’s sensibilities when he could easily enough have smoothed over differences and gained the approbation of his critics rather than their disdain. Why did Shaw offend so many people, and did his contrarian stance ultimately help or harm the causes he championed?
